What is a Martingale Collar

What is a Martingale Collar?

A martingale collar (also known as non-slip collar) is a style of dog collar that prevents a dog from slipping or backing out of it. Originally designed for Whippets, Greyhounds, Salukis and other sighthound breeds, martingale collars offer benefits to other breeds as well.

Martingale collars are designed with two loops, one at the front which gently tightens as you pull and the other for adjusting to fit your dogs neck.

These types of collars prevent dogs from escaping but also offer a safer and more comfortable alternative to traditional training collars and choke collars. Martingale collars discourage pulling by tightening gently and only to a point as opposed to choke collars which can continue to tighten and constrict a dog's neck beyond what is comfortable and safe for them.

Martingale collars should be light-weight and made from soft flexible material. They distribute the pressure evenly around your dogs neck rather than concentrating it on one area, which makes them more comfortable for your dog.

The martingale collar is particularly useful for sighthounds because their heads are narrower than their necks meaning that they can easily back out of traditional dog collars as well as many types of harnesses, however any breed can benefit from the added security and training function.

For the safety of your dog we recommend that martingale collars be worn for walking only and removed when unsupervised. In the event that the collar loosens or the d-ring gets caught on something martingales are always best used with supervision. We also recommend that any ID tags be hung from the metal loops and not the d-ring to avoid catching.
